The Drylands:
This was my first SF novel. It arose from a series of short stories published in Asimov’s Magazine that became known as The Drylands stories, because of their setting in a future, global-warming afflicted US. Several of the main characters in the novel first appeared in short stories. Jeremy came to life in ‘Water Bringer’ an Asimov’s Story reprinted in Synthesis and Other Virtual Realities, Dan Greely appeared there first, then had his own story in Celilo, also in Asimov’s, And finally, Nita first met readers in Asimov’s The Bee Man. Two more Drylands stories; Rainstone, and Stairway began in Asimov’s and are now collected in Sythnesis. And there is a direct connection between Rainstone and Stairway.
